Grasses
once formed the foundation of the Great North American
Prairie. Although there are many more species of
wildflowers, the plant community as a whole was dominated
by a few robust and adaptive native grasses.
Despite
the wholesale conversion of the prairie into cropland,
these grasses have not disappeared, and they are being planted
today at an increasing rate for their attractive
appearance and ease of care.
