Canada Milk Vetch - Astragalus canadensis
This striking member of the legume family resembles Wild Lupine with its pagoda-like towers of creamy yellow flowers arising from the contrasting dark green leaves in mid-summer. Growing in full sun, in well drained soil, it is an important food source for birds as it holds its seed into late fall and early winter. Canada Milk Vetch is also a butterfly attractor and is the host plant for the Western Tailed Blue butterfly larvae.

SEED GERMINATION INFO Seed needs scarification. Rub seed between two sheets of sandpaper to scrape the seed coat - stop if seeds are being crushed. Then mix seed with moist but not wet, sterile growing medium. Place mixture in a labeled, sealed plastic bag and store in refridgerator for six to eight weeks. Note: Some seed may germinate in the storage bag if moist stratified too long. If sprouting occurs, plant immediately. Another method is to sow seed outdoors in late autumn so that they may overwinter.
