Sorghastrum nutans - Indiangrass

The silky-soft, golden bronze seed-heads of Indiangrass lend beauty and drama to the autumn landscape. Reaching four to seven feet tall, it makes a strong late season statement. The second most important tallgrass next to Big Bluestem, Indiangrass grows rapidly and often matures in the second year after seeding. Sorghastrum nutans grows in all well-drained soils. Indian Grass can be aggressive, spreading by rhizomes, so is not recommended for very small gardens. Many different species of grasshoppers and caterpillars feed on the blades of Sorghastrum nutans, in turn, these insects are important food sources for upland game birds and song birds, where they will also find ideal nesting habitat in stands of Indian Grass. For a solid stand of Indiangrass plant at a rate of 5 KG per acre.
